They're Doing across America What They Executed to Christianity

Trumpism's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president commenced revealing everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom twice the size of the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing portion to construct it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and this week a study predicted his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing major areas of the executive mansion to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom maintain dealings with the government.

We went from 'the humble will receive the world' to 'the humble will perish to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to observe the chief executive try to upend the old idea of democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into an icon of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this change developed at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

Hence I shall explain the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and because the fastest-growing cadre of Americans might have little sense of him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably not the story of a mighty king appearing; conversely, a baby is born to homeless parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his message focuses on affection for others, specifically for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing is that if an individual takes your outer garment you ought to provide him your sweater too.

The evident and clear fact that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a type of profound affection centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: appealing to the populace, but because of its intrinsic extremism requiring to be restrained. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Highest Among Us

So I have been inspired to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the movement that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in numbers during minor elections. We must have to maintain it, and in the same spirit, with American flags throughout each rally and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the immigrant? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?

America is best defended, in other words, by relationship to the highest within national tradition, just as Christianity is optimally secured through connection to that which renders it special and magnificent, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest acting as if the worst about the nation and Christian faith was nonexistent; it means both humility and belief, a combination that committed US believers should embrace.
