The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
