RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
