Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Officers say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state initial examinations indicate the substance was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.
City officials stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the community for information.
An important representative commented the incident made him speechless and needed to be solved promptly.
"This act hits the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
