The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.
"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.
The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
